Today’s focus is on “secuestrar”, which can be expressed in To Kidnap, To abduct, To Hijack depending on the context.

To Kidnap: We usually use to kidnap to refer to a person that has been deprived of  freedom and kept hostage as a bargaining tool. It usually involves ransom demands or a threat.

Example: Three Spanish volunteers working for a NGO were kidnapped by desert bandits.

To Abduct: Unlike to kidnap, to abduct doesn’t involve a ransom or a threat, but it involves taking someone away illegally by force or deception. Moreover, we use to abduct when aliens or UFOs are involved.

Example: A parent abducted his son after his claims for custody were rejected.

Example: In the movie “Mars Attacks”, the president of the USA is abducted by aliens.

To Hijack: This verb involves illegally seizing control of an aircraft, ship or vehicle while in transit.

Example: A terrorist group hijacked the flight SL98 yesterday morning in Mogadishu.

To Look for’, ‘to search’ and ‘to seek’ are synonyms but they are sometimes used in different ways. For example,we can say

“I’m looking for a  ”

“I’m searching for a ” or

“I’m seeking a ”

without any change of meaning; the only grammatical difference is that the preposition ‘for’ is not necessary with the verb ‘seek’. But this changes if we need to make nouns or adjectives. For example, we can say that a person is a seeker but not a “looker for”, and we can carry out a search on the Internet, but not a “seek”.
